A Question for the New Year

I know it has been a while since I've posted here, but hopefully in the new year I will be post more often with mathematical observations and contests.

So here's a question to get you thinking... when the current time in Los Angeles, California is eleven minutes and eleven seconds after eleven in the evening tonight (December 31, 2010), what will be happening at the same time in Dallas, TX?

Answer to appear soon.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

About Today...

Today marks a couple of milestones... my father-in-law has a birthday today and it is also my (Dallas) pastor and wife's wedding anniversary.

But there is something mathematically that happens today. Do you know what it is? Post your guesses here.

Here's your challenge: find TWO words of at least four letters that can be spelled using the symbols on this table. The letters must be in the same order as it is on the table. Then you must tell me what elements you used. Here's my example (that you cannot use):

Li + Fe = Life
The elements I used were Lithium and Iron.

I have also found a word using FOUR elements. Maybe you will find it as well...

Here is a link for that table, courtesy of http://web.viu.ca/earle/geol111/periodic-table.gif.

b. Simplify the following expression. Then, tell me what does the expression equal to if x = 11?

-5(x - 3) + 4(2 - x) - 3x
